2012 NEASC Report for Orono High School

Greetings from Orono High School,

My name is Jim Chasse.  I am the proud principal of Orono High School.  Thank you for the opportunity to serve the youth of our area!  Our students are simply spectacular!  They are spectacular in the classroom, on stage, on the athletic field and throughout the community.  Please allow me to brag a little bit about OHS with just a few of our recent accomplishments:

•100 AP Exams in 2010 reveal an average score of 3.0+

•College Placements included Cambridge, Bowdoin, Princeton, UMaine, ...

•Girls Track State Champions 2012

•5 Eastern Maine Championships

•4 National Merit Scholar Finalist (highest small school % in state)

•Addition of 3 Advanced Placement Courses

•Orono begins OHS-International with 13 International Students

•OHS garners three athletic coach-of-the-year awards

•OHS begins Nordic Ski Team program with full squad

•OHS student receives perfect score on English SAT exam

•18 students participate in engineering/sciences college research internship

•OHS completes year-one as only local 1:1 laptop school

•Alumni home to recent gubernatorial candidate

•A total community outpouring for a fallen soldier and school teacher

Orono High school continues to provide a rigorous and broad selection of courses for students. The course offerings include a full compliment of math and science and the humanities.  The high school maintains an integrated relationship with the University of Maine, where many students enroll in early college courses as well as participate in summer internships.  Classes at OHS are college preparatory.  Some of our students also attend United Technologies Center in Bangor, Maine.

Student participation rates in athletics and clubs is nearly 90%.  We offer 16 varsity athletic programs and 23 club/organization programs. This year OHS brought home 5 Eastern Maine Championships,   2 runner-up and a semi-finalist finish.  Our clubs were equally successful with Speech and Debate competing at the national level and drama placing at the MPA One-Act Drama Festival.

OHS is a shining gem with an even brighter future.  I am impressed with the caliber of our teachers, the support of our parents and the general spirit of the school.  There is a tradition of success at OHS, as well as a fresh wind of new progress.  We are in the fourth year of our international program, hosting students from all over the world.

I am looking forward to a fun-filled, hard-working and productive school year.  Please call me if you have any questions (866-4916).

Best Regards,
